Sunday Photo Fiction is a weekly challenge presented by my old friend Al Forbes.
The idea is to write a short story (200 word max) inspired by what you see in his picture (below).
This week’s cool photo leaves me no option but to write about man’s best friend.
And, in spite of what Marilyn says, often a girl’s, too.

Dog Food
She is standing at the roadside, weeping.
Her face is swollen, eye turning blue, lip bleeding.
Her nose looks broken.
I tell her I have friends who can look after her.
She won’t leave without her dog.
She points to the house, tells me the man, Frank, is dangerous.
I sit her in the car, make a call, tell her to relax.
I go in through the kitchen door.
Are you Frank, I ask the overweight oaf at the table.
He lurches to his feet, spewing oaths.
I break both his wrists, then each of his fingers in turn.
I tell him why.
I put the scruffy little mongrel in her arms.
He licks her face, making her flinch and giggle at the same time.
She asks nervously if Frank was a problem.
I laugh.
He was very helpful, I tell her.
I hold up a heavy shopping bag.
He even told me where you kept the dog food.
