Sunday Photo Fiction is a weekly challenge presented by Susan Spaulding, who has taken over this great weekly prompt from my old friend Al Forbes.
This week’s frankly ridiculous photo comes courtesy of John Brand.
The idea is to write a short story (200 word max) inspired by what you see in the picture (below).

Transylvania
People here are funny.
You probably know that this region has a bit of a reputation, right?
You know, Dracula and all that, because of a book written well over 100 years ago.
Now I admit that getting your throat bitten and your blood sucked out is not everyone’s idea of a restful night, but there are associated benefits.
However, some people don’t fancy the idea of eternal life because of the accompanying restrictions.
Okay, you have to spend all day sleeping in a coffin, which sounds pretty much like the average teenager’s dream.
At night you have to pop out and find other necks to gnaw on, usually without the owner’s consent.
And you are allergic to garlic.
But you get a really cool cape, and you can turn into a bat and swoop around like crazy.
Anyway the folk here are pretty anti-vampire in general.
They rarely mix socially with the undead.
In fact, they go to great lengths to avoid them.
Now these poor unloved creatures are quite difficult to kill.
But a stake through the heart and a bit of decapitation does the trick every time.
Easier than growing a 15-foot lump of topiary, I think.
