Ex-Wife
I have just received a phone call from my ex-wife, a lovely lady who has apparently abandoned any pretence of rivalry over the affection of our spoilt and frankly loathsome grandchildren to concentrate on hating me with a refreshingly sincere and admirably deep-rooted passion.
So I confess that I am surprised when she starts off the conversation by enquiring about my health.
Do you ever get sharp pains in your chest, she asks, as though someone has created a voodoo effigy of you, and is thrusting long sharp pins into your body?
Well, no, I reply, rather touched at her concern, but thank you for caring enough to ask?
She mutters something inaudible, and there is a short pause before she speaks again.
How about now?
